  • Corn is a warm season tender annual and requires nutrient-rich soil. Plant in well-drained fertile soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. Can tolerate clay soils. Fertilize the ground in spring with high-quality compost or organic fertilizer. Direct sow after soil has warmed to 65 degrees F and all danger of frost has passed. Optimal temperature for germination is 85 degrees F. For transplants, start indoors 4 weeks before last frost. Plant in blocks of at least 4 rows for adequate pollination.
